Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) causes enlargement of the largest blood vessel of the lower body (abdominal aorta). Most people who have AAA do not have symptoms. Not knowing you have this enlargement can lead to rupture and sudden death. Causes include high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, tobacco use, male sex, older age, and a family history of AAA.

Most people will never know they have AAA unless they are screened. One of the benefits that Medicare offers as part of their Wellness visits, includes the discussion of whether or not you should have an ultrasound, a painless test that can look for AAA. Medicare will pay for this ultrasound if you are over age 65, and meet one of the following requirements: have a family history of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, or are a man who has smoked more than 100 cigarettes in his lifetime. There are other affordable ways of obtaining this ultrasound, so if you are under 65 and have concerns, please feel free to reach out to your primary care provider!
