Medicare covers a health assessment and disease prevention exam each 12 months that you have Medicare Part B. Medicare is for people who have disability, end stage kidney disease (dialysis or transplant), or age 65 and up. This “Wellness” exam should not occur when you are sick. The exam includes a complete review of your health to identify any future healthcare needs you may have. This exam does not include an actual physical exam from your doctor, lab draw, medication refills, or treatment of your current medical problems. Those portions are considered “Chronic Disease Management” and will be assessed on a later date.
During the exam, you will have a limited screening of height, weight, blood pressure, vision, and hearing. You may have an ECG. You will have depression and memory testing. Fall risk scores will be calculated. Vaccines and Cancer screenings will be discussed. Education and discussion of your Living Will, Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare, and End-of-life wishes will take place. You will leave with a written checklist completed by you and your physician, outlining future cancer screening and preventative healthcare needs.
