Older adults often experience chronic health conditions that require medication treatment. Aging changes the way the body metabolizes medications. According to the American Geriatrics Society, some medications should be avoided as they may be harmful for older folks. There may be safer alternative medications for treatment. But do not stop taking any medication without first talking to your healthcare provider.

If you are over age 65, avoid these medications or use them with caution:

  • NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) like Ibuprofen or Aleve. These can interfere with other medications and cause bleeding stomach ulcers. They raise Blood Pressure and can harm your heart and kidneys.
  • Aspirin for prevention. For treatment of heart disease and stroke, discuss with your doctor. This can cause stomach ulcers.
  • Antihistamines, like diphenhydramine (Benadryl, Tylenol PM) or chlorpheniramine. These can cause memory issues, dry mouth and dry eyes, constipation and urine problems.
  • Prescriptions Medications. Certain classes of prescription medications, such as those for diabetes, muscle relaxers, anxiety, depression, and insomnia, can cause sedation. These leave people groggy, confused and increase the risk of falls.
