Since it is close to February and February is National Heart Health Month and we thought it would be a good time to tell you about our Cardiac Rehabilitation Program offered through the FAMC Outpatient Center. Cardiac Rehab is a multi-disciplinary program that helps a patient that’s experienced a recent cardiac event to get back to baseline activity levels to live a more productive and rewarding life.
To be considered for Cardiac Rehab, patients must fit into one of the following categories:
- Post myocardial infarction within the past twelve months
- Post coronary artery bypass surgery, angioplasty, coronary stenting, or valvular surgical procedures within the past twelve months
- Patients with documented coronary artery disease with stable angina pectoris
- Heart or heart-lung transplants
Each session consists of a warmup, prescribed exercises, an education video/topic, and a cool down. Exercises are progressed each visit according to the patient’s tolerance level and per Physical Therapy’s recommendations. The primary goal of the FAMC Cardiac Rehab Program is to provide for the physical and physiological well-being of the patient. Other goals are to provide reconditioning, reduce fear and anxiety, reduce risk associated with activity, and to educate individuals and their families about cardiovascular disease and wellness. A patient can qualify for up to 36 sessions (varies by insurance) total. Call to setup an appointment with your local healthcare provider at 605-598-6262 to discuss if you are a candidate for Cardiac Rehab.
